THE STORY OF JOSEPH

Sunday 19th December 2010 – Pastor Mark Ballosingh

Matthew 1 v1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham

v16And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Joseph is the essence of the birth of the Christ child, had it not been for Joseph Jesus would not have come from the royal linage of King David. Verse 1 tells us about the linage of Joseph. In the Old Testament your linage was particularly important.

Joseph was a righteous and just man, espoused to Mary. Espousal in that time was more important the formal written marital documents, espousal was a commitment. Being espoused to Mary, Joseph found out that she was with child. According to Moses’ law Joseph could have done 2 things (1) Stone Mary (2) Divorce her……but this was the beginning of the New Testament and they would no longer have to rely on the law of Moses, this was a new era and they were entering into the dispensation of grace.

Joseph being a just man heard from God and an angel of the Lord appeared to him “v 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.”. A supernatural thing guided by the hands of God was about to happen in the life of Mary and Joseph. When God gets ready to do something supernatural in your life he will take you as an ordinary carpenter and give you the understanding to go with His direction.

The angel of God addressed him from his linage, that which is happening is destiny and for God’s purpose, remember who you are, you are a child of the King. The world doesn’t see what God sees, when God speaks to you he speaks to you from your origin, a child of destiny, purpose, when folks point figures at you to ridicule you, God reminds you who you are, “You are a child of the King”.

When God moves you He moves you from definite to definite and not definite to indefinite, “fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost” – definite, that which is happening to Mary has nothing to do with you, it has to do with God. Remember when we look at people in certain situations do not despise them for we know not what God is doing in their lives.

The Bible records Joseph heard from God, how the society today lacks father figures and lacks fathers who hear from God……God placed fathers to hear from Him and lead their household. Joseph was attentive to the Word of God, he never took a decision without hearing from God….Joseph was a disciplined man for when God spoke he understood the words of God spoken to him. In the account, Joseph never questioned God such Faith that he relied on God’s direction and never questioned Him.

Joseph becomes the husband of Mary and the natural human father of Jesus. People would look at them as an ordinary family John 1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. John 6:42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

Joseph was a good father he was a carpenter by trade and would be a mentor, he taught his son his trade a passing down of knowledge. One of the things lacking in this world today is the passing down of knowledge because of the absenteeism of fathers. Fathers must be teachers and mentors.

Joseph was from Bethlehem and in order for Jesus to fulfill prophecy he would have to be born at a certain place at a certain time which would fall upon the shoulders of Joseph to ensure this happened Luke 2 v 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) For at that time Caesar Augustus passed a decree that all the world should be taxed every one into his own city.

Bethlehem would be the prophetic birth place of Christ and Joseph would have to take Mary there to give birth. The birth of Christ is based on a geographical understanding to follow the path they would have to travel to Bethlehem.

Bethlehem meant “The House of Bread”…..Jesus is the Bread of Life…….how significant it was that Bethlehem was the birth place of Joseph and this would be the birth place of Christ……Mary is the vessel that brought forth the Christ child but Joseph was highly important and significant as he had the connection to The Prophetic….King David would grow up in Bethlehem and they would call it “Zion”

On this journey in Mary’s displacement, tiredness, weariness, she never complained, the Bible never records her giving Joseph a discouraging comment…Joseph would provide to the best of his ability for Mary, when they came to the stable Joseph would ensure she had a place to rest….
When the angels came Joseph was present with Mary, representing the complete family, Luke 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.…It was in God’s destined for family life to be important and close to the heart of God. When family life is restored to this nation God will be glorified. The angels serenaded them and Praise was part of the birth of Jesus Christ, as believers we must Praise and Worship…..A great celebration in a humble place.

How could Christ be born in a barn when Joseph came from a royal linage? One would expect a king to be born in a palace…but what the world deems as kingly is not what God deems as kingly, Christ came with a marked difference, he would rise up and set the captives free.

Joseph is again visited by an angel of God Matthew 2 13-19 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

Joseph listens and goes where God directed him for the preservation of the life of Jesus and Mary. Joseph takes instructions, listens then moves. Joseph never left Egypt until God spoke to him.
The spirit of Herod is alive in our nations today, the spirit which wants to murder our children, the spirit of abortion, a cruel and murderous spirit. How we need God to speak to fathers to lead their children to a place of safety and preservation.

The angel of the Lord again appears unto Joseph Matthew 2 20-23 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Joseph was a devote man and would attend The Passover every year Luke 2:41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. It was the duty of the father to buy the offerings and take it to the priest to receive the blessings of the priest. Joseph took seriously his relationship with God and his spiritual responsibility to God.

Joseph took Jesus into the temple to dedicate Him Luke 2 27-34 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

Joseph: a protector, provider, instructor, mentor, a man who heard and listened to the voice of God.
