Edify – the act of building
Empower – to promote spiritual growth and character in the life of the believer.
Romans 14 – Paul addresses the Corinthian and Roman church. In Rome, there was a cult led by a woman, their temple was situated above a volcano and the gases, fumes emitted would make them dizzy and drunk, their leader would babble and they thought she was speaking in tongues…..When the Roman church got the news of the Pentecost they would be confused as to which one was correct…believer, not everyone who speaks in tongues is of God.
Paul had to address the church on the practice of speaking in tongues. When we speak in tongues it must edify the entire church 1 Corinthians 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
V13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in [his] brother’s way. – Paul tells them do not let the weak ones stumble and fall away but strengthen and edify them.
V 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. – Peace, one of the greatest tools of the enemy is to bring discord within the church. If there is disagreement within the church then we cannot edify each other. In your striving to empowerment we must edify each other.
V 20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed [are] pure; but [it is] evil for that man who eateth with offence. – Romans would offer their meat to idols before they ate….Paul instructs them not to offer their meat to the idols for if a weaker brother sees you he will not be edified. V21 [It is] good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor [any thing] whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak if you are about to do something which may offend a new believer or a weak brother which will cause him to leave the church then do not do it. The Jews were very restricted in their eating habits and would drink wine with their meals…..this would cause confusion between the Jews and Gentiles but the word wine had nine different meanings in the Bible. V 21 Edification means the church being an example and Paul admonishes the church.
1 Corinthians 14:3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. Let them who prophecy, let it edify the entire church. For the edification of the church when you prophesy ensure when you say Dost sayeth the Lord, be completely sure it is from God. When prophecy comes from God there is confirmation. It cannot be prophetic if it does not expand the kingdom and edify God.
V 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for[a] he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.– Edification brings with it Order. In those days there would be a person who would speak in tongues, bring prophecy and someone who would interpret….there was order in the church
V 12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.– Spiritual gifts…spiritual gifts are not for personal benefit but it must be used for the expansion and enhancement of the Kingdom of God.
V 26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification – whatever you do, let everything and everyone be lifted and blessed. Christ to the sinner is a stumbling block for He is a reminder to them that they are not doing the right thing. The spiritual growth & character of the believer is promoted by teaching and by example.
1 Corinthians 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.– Edification of the church must have an impact
Acts 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.. Today the church struggles to multiply itself for the church has lost fear of God. The church has to have the fear of God to elevate herself. In the process of edification let there be Fear of God.
Edification comes by patient labouring. Spiritual Progress is as a result of Patient Labour. The church must learn to labour in the spirit…..the church needs to stay close to the altar for at the altar there is labouring in the spirit. 1 Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe [he is] precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner – promoting spiritual growth and development of character of believers by teaching or by example.
The effect of edification impacts in the relationship of the believers one with each other – 1 Corinthians 8:1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. 1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not., 1 Corinthians 14:17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. It is important we see the results of edification for it is an internal thing within the Body of Christ.
Edification in an individual talks about building up – embolden the individual.
Ezekiel 37 1 -9: 1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which [was] full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, [there were] very many in the open valley; and, lo, [they were] very dry. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but [there was] no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
When Ezekiel stood in the valley and watched his reflection in the water, he saw dry bones and would hear the voice of God “can these bones live?” God would call the winds from the 4 corners of the earth and upon his dry bones would become flesh. Edification brings life to that which was seemingly dead. Edification will bring with it substance, purpose to that which was of no purpose.
Thanks be to God that He could take nothing and make it into something.
Ask yourself, am I growing, am I learning, have I moved from the valley of dry bones and had flesh added? If you are lacking in any area today, God says ask.
