John 2 1-5And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
This miracle at the wedding was done for a number of reasons. Jesus said it is not my time but there is a great need:-
1) For the Father to be glorified
2) To cement the disciples’ belief in Christ, witnessing the very first miracle of Christ would strengthen their faith
3) To show Jesus had the solution in a situation that depicted weakness, shame and disappointment. When the Jews felt there was no avenue to source the wine they would go to Mary, but Mary knew she was in no position to bring them out of their situation and she would turn to Jesus. Mary would emphasize to them “whatever Jesus saith, do” these would be the last recorded words of Mary who points everyone to Jesus.
This is the 1st miracle of Jesus which launches His ministry….Jesus emphasized to come to Him and no one else for your solution.
Jesus turns to them and begins a process….Believer, every miracle has to go through a process……Why a process? Because people expect answers right away but the process enables that measure of faith in our life to rise up, to let go and let God…..Luke 17:6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” every Believer has a measure of faith, but some of us miss getting our miracle because we fail to activate our faith.
John 2 6-7 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
Jesus asks specifically the number, type of vessel and contents of the vessel – 6 stone pots filled with water. Today you may be that vessel, Jesus wants to be specific and walk you through the process to access your miracle, just allow Him to be Lord over your life.
The disciples were obedient to His instructions. Faith demands obedience. Many Believers miss their blessings because they fail to be obedient…..Obedience brings about your answer.
The account of Elijah and the widow…..Although she was about to go home and kill herself and her child, she was obedient to the words of Elijah and received her blessing.
1 Kings 17:12-16 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. 15And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. 16And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.
The disciples would go and fill the pots with water….to the natural eye and heart that cannot attune to what God can do this would not have made sense…….when they brought the water to Jesus, He would command “draw it out and take it to the governor” it does not record Jesus praying over the water…..the governor would ask v10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. If you feel like you are in a situation where there is no hope, there is nothing to look forward to, hold on for the latter is greater than the former
The wine is very significant for it represented the Holy Ghost…..In Acts the Jews would think the disciples were drunk but Simon says “we are not drunk with the wine you have given us but we are filled with a new wine” Fresh wine, a new wine, something better than the old, fresh wine to bring refreshment and healing. Out of your darkness a light will shine, darkness would not be able to comprehend for Jesus has promised “I will be with you to the end”, look trouble in the face and say Jesus is here in the midst to bring me through….
Jesus is the true and living vine drink of me and I will renew you, if you drink this wine, you will not thirst again……..are you drinking from the true vine? Jesus is all you need, do not get hung up on your circumstance for in the midst of it there is a solution, in the midst of the fire where Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were thrown Jesus was in the midst to save and deliver them out.
The Bible says it is the beginning of miracles and a sign and confirmation of who Jesus is. When Jesus begins to work in your life there will always be a confirmation.
The Bible records the 3rd day there was a wedding and Jesus and His mother were present. The 3rd day had much significance in the Bible, Jesus began His ministry on the 3rd day, Jesus would rise again after 3 days, Jonah was in the belly of the whale for 3 days in order for his purpose to be revealed to him, in the account of the temple on the day of the Passover Jesus would say “I will destroy it and rebuild in 3 days John 2:19”
A significant start of Jesus’ministry on the 3rd day, a divine sign which would demonstrate His power and divine authority, His presence at the wedding was not by chance……when Jesus steps into your life it is not by chance. On the 3rd day, the power of Jesus is demonstrated, He stamps His divine authority and His disciples knew He is the Christ.
I’ve come to let you know, whatever you are facing, in the 3rd day, in the 3rd hour of the 3rd season the Resurrection Power of Jesus will bring you through to show the Power of God is still alive, wherever there is a need Jesus is there, Christ is un-mistakenly an awesome God, He is the Son of God in the flesh, He is the lily of the valley, a true a Living God.
John demonstrates the closeness of God to the people and their problems in this chapter, He was right there in the midst of the situation. Aren’t you glad that Jesus is right in the midst of your situation? In the midst of it all we need to recognise Jesus, He is the peace that passeth all understanding, He is the bridge over troubled waters, He is in the midst to bless, to answer and to solve our problems…..sometimes we are so focused on the problem we only see the negative but when darkness surrounds you when the negative comments impact you know that Jesus is right there in the midst to deliver and bring you through.
