“You cannot give that which you do not have”

Sunday 15th May 2011 – Pastor Mark Ballosingh

One of the greatest things you can do as a Believer which will bring a blessing is winning a soul, it just goes to show when you take care of God’s business He will surely take care of yours. In the Bible Jesus said “don’t you know I am about my Father’s business?” Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

In these end times, there is a greater need for Believers to be carriers and dispensers of the truth of God. Jesus was a master fishermen, He would call to Simon Peter and his brother Andrew to follow Him Matthew 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, this was a command to go and spread the word and win the souls of men. The word witness appears twenty nine times in the New Testament. In Greek the word witness translates to a martyr – one who will die for what they believe in.

To be an effective witness, one must have a testimony. Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. The endowment of the power of the Holy Spirit enables us to be effective witnesses, the Holy Spirit brings boldness and confidence in the life of the Believer Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 3: 1-8 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. 2And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. 4And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 5And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 6Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God

Peter and John were heading to the temple to pray, people who are strong witnesses are prayerful people, for in their time of prayer the Holy Spirit fills them up. Prayer is the vehicle in which the Holy Spirit is transported in the life of an individual.

On their way to the temple there was a man in need. Witnessing is for those who can reach out to those with a need, we have been commanded to compel people to the gospel – And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled Luke 14:23

Peter and John noticed the man in need – be quick to notice the people around you. Peter and John were aware of their environment and were aware of the man who laid at the gate of the church, the church where he sat for years – the church does not have the answer……..here comes two men empowered and edified with the Holy Spirit and they noticed the man…Those who have a genuine experience with God have the answer for it is difficult to pass those in need after their experience with God.

In the account, the man is asking for alms but Peter and John are walking in the spiritual and had more to offer him than money – there is a contrast here between what is seen in the natural to that seen in the supernatural. When you are a witness for Christ you operate at a different dimension, we need to sharpen ourselves as believers to draw others into the Kingdom.

Peter together with John fastens their eyes on the man, which shows agreement and confirmation. It is said that the eye is the window to the condition of the soul, the spirit of discernment allows them to see the soul of the man. It is easy to see the outward but Peter and John saw the condition of his heart.

Witnessing demands we pray first so we could see past the physical for sometimes the physical is as a result of a spiritual need. Peter and John were attuned in the spirit to recognize his spiritual need.
“Look on us” There was communication and the man looked up at them in expectation.

In witnessing communication is important. Communication is important for successful soul winning. What Peter and John had to say to him was not what he expected to hear many of times what the unbeliever wants to hear is not what God wants them to hear – “silver and gold have I none” – you cannot give that which you do not have, but we as believers have something different, something that is worth more than money, something to help the root cause of the problem. Here is what we do have and what we can give to you 6Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Peter takes him by his right hand, the extension of the right hand signifies the sealing of the deal….it is completed, I make a promise to you, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth you are healed. Peter and John sealed the deal just as Jesus sealed the deal in Heaven, Jesus sitteth at the right hand of the Father sealing the deal of our salvation….. by His stripes we are healed..

Important in witnessing:-
1) The given Word
2) Action – goes with the Word, praying gives people Hope, prayer changes things, prayer is the catalyst which drives the Word into a persons’ life

Peter and John began to pray with him. In the Name of Jesus Christ – they identify the God they represent. When you pray “in the name of Jesus” every knee shall bow, demons will flee, sickness is healed, the plans of the enemy are arrested.

They then lifted him up and he immediately got strength and began to walk, when God brings someone to you to witness to it is because they are in a weakened state and they need strength. They reached out their hand, sealed the deal, prayed in Jesus’ Name and a result came immediately, he began to jump, leap, praise God and ran into the church. When your witnessing is effective, joy and strength will come back to the person.

Coming to church is not the answer, the Word of God needs to be imparted. So many churches in our nation, yet we are in a dire state, it is time to rise up as the church of Jesus Christ and bring Hope and strength back into the lives of people.

Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
Perfect – sure, right, pure, clean, eternal, true, all together righteous. Bringing the soul to a place of enlightenment. There is no if or but, the Word, Will and Ways of the Lord is sure, when what you give is sure, God’s Word is infallible. Sometimes the very educated people need something simple like your testimony to bring them into the understanding of the Word of God and the Wisdom of God, In the book of John he would take the simple things of the world to confound the wise.

Testimony and witnessing is a weapon against the enemy, for we overcome the enemy by the Blood of the Lamb and the words of our testimony. The work of the church is to witness, it is an area the church is failing at miserably for when we look at the state of our country it reflects the failure of the church to be a witness and a testimony.

  1. Every man has a story of how they where once lost and have been found. The problem is the men of the church have forgotten how to be of one accord. You stated Peter and John prayed with the lame man not at him. We men of the church need to learn how pray with one another again and not at one another.
