ABC’s of Witnessing

June 5th 2011 – Pastor Mark Ballosingh

Witnessing is a battle for the soul of men it is a competition between the devil and the believer.

1) Attitude
2) Behaviour
3) Character

Attitude
What type of attitude should we have when we approach an unbeliever? It is an attitude of love. What the church lacks today is love amongst the believers. God is love, he that loveth is of God. We cannot share love if we do not have or know love. True love is described in the Word of God “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son” giving is an offshoot of love. We as believers have the good news and the Word of God to give to those who are heart broken, those who are weak in spirit, those who are lost.
To be a good witness we need to feel what others are going through, at the Cross Jesus’ bowels were moved with compassion, He felt the pain deep inside of Him. It is easy to feel the pain when it is someone close to us but to be effective we need to feel the pain of those who are not our own. John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Greater love brings out your compassion, extends your hand of mercy to reach out to someone and carry the gospel.

1 Corinthians 13 8-13 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Behaviour
Your testimony is a demonstration of your behaviour and character. You may not be a Pastor or an Apostle but when the world sees you, you are a demonstration of the Christ you represent, you are a witness of Jesus Christ.

Paul speaks to Timothy on his behaviour in witnessing effectively. 2 Timothy 2 14-16 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

2 Timothy 2 22-26 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.1 Timothy 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

Character
There is a difference between reputation and character, as believers we must have blameless character. Blameless – unimpeachable. 1 Corinthians 1- 4:8 I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, 5 that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, 6 even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, 7 so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Philippians 2:15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world

1 Thessalonians 5:23And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Timothy 5:7And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

The devil tries to taint your character so it is difficult for you to be a witness to others, every time you try to witness the devil reminds you of something in your past to prevent you from being an effective witness. Your character is something you have to constantly guard for people have to see you practice what you preach, you live, speak and think that which you are witnessing to them on.

God does not only want to preserve your soul, He also wants to preserve your character. On the Day of Judgment He will judge your spirit, soul and character. The Cross is where your character begins, for at the Cross God forgives us of our past, being a witness requires us to visit the Cross regularly so the devil cannot point anything at us for the Cross regenerates, rectifies, gives repentance and restores.

Questions to ask when you go to witness….
1) If you die, what is going to happen to your soul Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment
2) If Jesus should come tonight where would you go 1 Thessalonians 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3) Without Christ in your life, what hope is there for you?

We need to be good listeners to get that opening to speak to people about Christ, for some people are just waiting for a word of encouragement but we need to listen first. When Jesus went to speak to Zacchaeus He listened to him then said in Luke 19:9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
